In the bustling city of Manchester, amongst the Game of Thrones styled oldest public library in the english language, and crowds of football fanatics, is a hostel named Hatters on Newton. When browsing hostelworld.com it was one of the first ones to come up, with (at the time) fairly good reviews. I was only going to be there one night as I was only in Manchester to catch a plane to Amsterdam, but oh how I wish I had looked around a bit more.
Starting with the dim lighting and staff that appeared to wish they could be anywhere else but there, I didn’t get a great first impression. As you can see in images on hostelworld.com, the place is cute, they do a good job as the aesthetic of all, I will give them that.

However, the awe of the decor quickly fades when you realize there is no heating, in February. I attempted to hang out in the large common area to see if I could make some new friends, but after 10 minutes shivering I headed upstairs to bed my 18 bed mixed dorm. I stayed in an 18 bed dorm as the place had a fairly high price range and a backpackers gotta go what a backpackers gotta due.
I woke up that next morning to a room full of six 50+ year old men walking around in their briefs. Yes, hairy, beer-bellied, half naked, men. Now know this is not the hostels fault, however in my experience certain hostels attract certain crowds of people, just something to keep in mind.
Once the room cleared I got up and headed to a shower before I had to check out. As I entered the large open bathroom lined with many small glass door shower stalls (can you say privacy), I was excited for a little bit of warmth. To my dismay there was no hot water. There wasn’t even warm water. I quickly finished up my morning and headed on my way, happy to never have to stay there again.
